NEWYORKBIO DELIVERS LETTER TO MAYOR MAMDANI URGING SUPPORT OF NYC’S LIFE SCIENCE INDUSTRY
More than 125 life science leaders and representatives from more than 65 companies joined the leading trade association for New York’s life science industry in advocating for continued funding for NYCEDC’s LifeSciNYC Initiative
New York, NY (June 25, 2026) – NewYorkBIO, the leading advocate of New York’s life science community, today announced the delivery of a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani urging his administration and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to maintain funding and resources for LifeSciNYC, its initiative focused on life science development in the city, including the $1 billion investment in programs and infrastructure supporting the city’s life sciences ecosystem.
The letter is backed by a broad cross-section of the ecosystem, with signatures from representatives of over 65 companies and totaling over 125 industry leaders spanning early-stage biotech firms, entrepreneur driven ventures, ecosystem support organizations, investors, and foundations, demonstrating the sweeping ramifications off scaling back support for one of the city’s fastest growing sectors. Over the past decade, LifeSciNYC has demonstrated how economic development can expand access to opportunity and help ensure that high-quality careers are accessible to talented New Yorkers regardless of their ZIP code or background.
“We are proud to stand with the hundreds of life science companies we represent through NewYorkBIO, as well as the innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who quickly joined this effort following reports of significant staff reductions within the LifeSciNYC initiative,” said Jennifer Hawks Bland, CEO of NewYorkBIO. “LifeSciNYC has become a national model for how cities can foster innovation, create high-quality jobs, strengthen workforce development, and improve public health outcomes. The concerns expressed in this letter are not simply about staffing changes, but about what those changes may mean for the future of the initiative and its ability to continue developing the programs, partnerships, and opportunities that have fueled New York’s growth as a global life sciences leader.”
In the letter, NewYorkBIO emphasizes the vital role of the life sciences sector in supporting a diverse, thriving workforce and advancing the city’s broader economic justice and public health goals. The organization urges the administration to maintain LifeSciNYC as a priority within NYCEDC, preserve the expertise and institutional capacity that support the sector, and continue investing in workforce development and innovation programs critical to New York City’s leadership in life sciences.
