Statement from Jennifer Hawks Bland on National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology Report
“Earlier today, the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB) delivered key findings and reported to Congress on the need for urgent action at the Congressional level to maintain U.S. global leadership in biotechnology innovation.
The U.S. has long been an exemplary leader in policies that bolster innovation, far ahead of competitor nations. However, we are now at risk of falling behind and allowing China to claim dominance in the biotechnology industry. We cannot allow this to happen - we must adopt proactive solutions and maintain vigilance in this important work.
Understanding the crucial work of NSCEB, NewYorkBIO previously met with representatives to ensure that New York’s life science ecosystem and the crucial role that it plays was portrayed in these findings. Together, we call upon our elected officials, members of academia and the private sector to ensure that our companies are granted both the resources and runways to innovate and develop the solutions and treatments for patients across the globe, while simultaneously growing our economy for generations to come.
NewYorkBIO joins BIO in expressing our gratitude to NSCEB for their years-long work to examine and present these findings that provide us with a roadmap, perspective, and shared goal for the future. We are hopeful that Congress and the Administration will come together to adopt policies that protect and support innovation here in the U.S.”
